Objective

Choose a favorite part of a story and tell why you like it, using story events, pictures, and feelings.

Materials

Mini-lesson — What is your favorite part?

Every reader has parts of a story they like best.

Your favorite part might be:

  • a funny part that makes you laugh
  • a part where a character feels happy, proud, or brave
  • an exciting part where something big happens
  • a part that reminds you of your own life

There is no wrong favorite as long as you can explain it.

Good readers can:

  • point to or show their favorite part
  • tell what happens in that part
  • say why they like it

You can use sentence frames like:

  • “My favorite part is when _____.”
  • “I like this part because _____.”

Today, you will read a tiny story, pick your favorite part, and tell why it is your favorite.

It is Saturday, and Mia wants to play outside.

She puts on her shoes, but big raindrops start to fall.

“Oh no! Now I can’t play,” Mia says.

2

Mia’s dad brings out a big box of art supplies.

“Let’s make our own fun,” he says.

They spread paper and paints all over the table.

3

Mia paints a bright rainbow and a giant sun.

She laughs when a drop of paint lands on her nose.

“This is even better than going outside!” she says.

4

When the rain stops, Mia hangs her picture in the window.

The sun comes out, and the real sky has a rainbow too.

“This was a good rainy day,” says Mia.
