Lesson 45: Matching pictures to words

📖 READING (40 Lessons)🟢 A. Sounds and Words

← Back to Level 1

Objective

Use sounds and meaning to match simple pictures to the correct words (cat, sun, map, cup, run, etc.).

Materials

Mini-lesson — Check the picture, check the word

Today you will practice matching pictures to the right words.

Good readers use the picture and the word together.

Try this:

  1. Look at the picture.
  2. Say what you see: “cat”, “sun”, “map”…
  3. Check the first letter in the word. Does it match the first sound you hear?
  4. Read the whole word and ask, “Does this word make sense with the picture?”

Example with a sun picture:

  • You say: “I see a sun.”
  • You see the words: sun, cup, bed.
  • You check the first letter: s is for “sun”.
  • You read the word sun and it matches the picture.

If the picture shows a sun but the word says cup, you stop and think:

  • “That does not fit the picture.”
  • You look again and choose the word that matches both the picture and the sounds.

When you use the picture and the word together, reading feels clearer and makes more sense.

Guided Practice — Picture-word mini-book

How to use this mini-book:

  1. On each page, imagine or draw the simple picture that is described.
  2. Have your child say what they would see: “a red sun,” “a cat on a mat,” etc.
  3. Then have them read the bold words that match the picture.
  4. Ask: “Does this word fit the picture?” If not, try again.

You can also use real pictures or stickers and write the words underneath for extra practice.
