Lesson 43: Recognizing sight words

📖 READING (40 Lessons)🟢 A. Sounds and Words

← Back to Level 1

Objective

Recognize and read common sight words such as the, and, you, and said in simple sentences.

Materials

Mini-lesson — What are sight words?

Some words show up in books all the time. We call these sight words.

Examples:

  • the, and, is, to
  • you, we, my, said

We want to know sight words so well that we can:

  • see the word and read it right away.
  • not have to stop and sound it out every time.
  • read sentences more smoothly.

To learn a sight word, good readers often:

  1. Look at the whole word.
  2. Say the word out loud.
  3. Trace it in the air with a finger.
  4. Write it a few times on paper.
  5. Use it in a short sentence, like “I see the dog.”

The more you see, say, and write sight words, the easier reading becomes.

  1. On each page, find the bold sight word.
  2. Say the sight word by itself: “the”, “you”, “said”…
  3. Read the whole sentence smoothly, without stopping on the sight word.
